Eating healthy is hard. Meditating is hard. Exercising is hard. Changing oneself is hard. Cultivating a fulfilling relationship is hard. Building a successful business is hard. Being a good parent is hard.


The trick is, if you can learn to love the feeling of making effort in the right direction, of being challenged and stretched, then there is nothing you cannot achieve. You will have many things that others wish but can’t achieve—like health, wealth, love, self-mastery, fulfilment, “success”.

Let’s take the example of better health and losing weight, with the efforts needed being exercise and dieting.

What you need to do is try to go to the gym with a glad attitude in your heart. Then, during exercise, tell yourself how good it feels—and try to feel it. After you’re finished, pay attention to any positive sensations or emotions that come up as a result of that effort. With a bit of practice, you will actually start liking it, and then your goals will be more easily achieved—without so much struggle
